The APPA provides some interesting statistics in regards to pet ownership in the US. Some of these numbers will blow your mind.

• About 60 million homes in the United States have at least one dog. Actually, there are almost 90 MILLION dogs living in homes in the US!

• The percentage of cat ownership is lower. The APPA estimates that about 47 million American homes have cats. But, the number of cats is larger than dogs. In fact, this number is larger by millions! It's estimated that there are over 94 million cats in homes throughout the United States!

• Over half of American households own a pet. The APPA estimates that around 68% of homes in the US have a pet.

• Pet owners are crazy about fish it seems. The 2017 survey revealed that homeowners have a total of over 135 million freshwater fish!

Of course, we all know pet owners don't just own dogs, cats, and fish. In fact, American homes are estimated to own over 20 million birds. As well as over 7 million horses.

It's no surprise that all these pet owners spend quite a bit as well. Sometimes it seems as if there is no limit to keeping our best friends happy. Over the years we've also began to spend more on our pets.

The APPA first surveyed pet owners in 1994. That year American households only spent about $17 billion on their pets. While just last year pet owners spent almost $67 billion on their pets! That's a huge increase.
